Road to QVC: Day 2 “I’ve got Butterflies for QVC”: Butterflies have always been a huge source of inspiration to me because of their strength, the beauty they embody, and the remarkable transformation they undergo to become butterflies. But, perhaps I enjoy them most because of their numerous similarities to us women. They are creatures of great external beauty and perceived as very fragile, and yet, they have the strength to flutter through the torrents of nature, unscathed, stronger, and more beautiful.

As women in this life we do much of the same. We are often noticed for our beauty and it isn’t until life’s experiences shape us that others (and at times, even we notice) the full strength we have within us! This transformation is a long journey and along with it can come many difficulties and heartache, but also laughter and joy. Similarly, the butterfly, when breaking free from its chrysalis undergoes an extended period of difficulty in its attempts to break free. It is an arduous time necessary to transform the caterpillar into the beautiful creature it was meant to be. During this period only the butterfly can escape its chrysalis, no one can help it. Otherwise, the butterfly can actually be crippled. It must go through the experience all by itself. Likewise, there are events that we individually must endure, that no one can help us survive. Outside help may be a hindrance to forming us into who we are supposed to become. Upon looking back we survey our life’s events and realize that without those difficult experiences we would never be able to make our journey of a thousand miles, like the fabulous butterfly.

The route of a thousand miles takes these magnificent butterflies to many a land far and wide. Thus, in many countries there are diverse beliefs about butterflies. In Japan, for example, the butterfly is the personification of a person’s soul; whether living, dying, or already dead. There is a superstition that follows which states: When a butterfly enters your guestroom and perches, the person who you love most will be coming to visit you. In Russian, the word for “Butterfly” is translated as “Grandmother”, packing countless positive emotions. The Ancient Greek word for “Butterfly” is translated as “Soul or Mind”. Also, in the Chinese culture, two butterflies flying together are symbolic of love. In historic cultures, butterflies also symbolize rebirth into a new life after being inside a cocoon for a period of time.

No matter which meaning of the word Butterfly you chose, I am hoping that the next time you see a wonderful butterfly dancing in the morning sunlight you will reflect and realize that it was only through a difficult process that it gained its wings and was able to soar. Perhaps now butterflies will be a great inspiration to you as much as they are to me.
